How much do you know about racks??
There are often common themes in fire incidents and the fire protection industry continues to evolve as these themes are recognized. In fact, many changes to the fire protection codes and standards are a result of fire accidents and the lessons learned.
A major theme that has risen to the surface in the past decade is the disconnect between sprinkler design and day-to-day operations. One of the more pertinent examples of this occurs in storage occupancies, where sprinkler systems are designed for certain storage configurations. Over time, with employee turnover or change in building ownership, the storage configuration can evolve beyond what the sprinkler system was originally designed to handle.
This is especially true with rack storage. If racks are loaded without consideration of the sprinkler design, fires can grow to a size that the fire protection system was not designed to contain. As such, it’s important to understand the limitations when using racks in a facility. This week we’re kicking off a series of posts on some key concepts to keep in mind when using racks in a facility. #firesafety #fireprotection
